A fervent believer, a hopeful observer of life’s intangible treasures, Heather Sullivan creates poems that capture dualities. In this collection, she hints at and highlights beauties within family members, beloved pets, and our own back yards— but exactly where they reflect the harshest realities of life: loss and death. She speaks her truths, and they are joys and heartaches that are universal to us all, at some stage of our lives or another. Under the guise of sonnets, nature poems and simple observations, Heather Sullivan‘s new collection, These Onyx Hours, is a powerful, moving and often wrenching exploration/celebration of the glorious and sometimes tragic dance we call “being human.” In these pages, we are reminded that faith is the only teacher we really need, and that loss is a necessary if almost unbearable transformation toward the ultimate beauty. Here is a poet who is not afraid of death, and her courageous poems revisit the young brother (whose hair was the color of the sun), dog, cat and grandmother who all left too soon. Yet Sullivan proves, poem after poem, that even while grief is “stalking the halls in her black slippers,” hope is always in the eaves, hovering on its own mighty wings like the hummingbird which, like so many powerful images in this collection, makes an astonishing and perfectly timed appearance. These poems are generous and spare, simple and sublime, and they are filled with ancient wisdom and fresh delight.
