Wandering Wonderful by Sarah Whiteley

Sarah Whiteley‘s writing is so evocative of her region and yet it shares universal truths. The love of nature and human nature springs from each line of her poetry where we find ourselves in the company of crows, jays and the brisk wind blowing through the trees.  Whiteley invites us to wander wonderfully with small dogs on city streets and along paths to view the riches of a mountain vista.  We are happy to tag along.

I’ve been anticipating the arrival of Sarah Whiteley‘s Wandering Wonderful, as I have long known that Sarah’s poems are a perfect balm for the present time. Her images and verses have the ability to make the reader’s heart skip a beat with pure joy and recognition. Only Sarah knows that “what is gray is also glistening,” and “prayer is a cricket, whether one or many” until she reminds us. To pick up this book is to slow down and notice, a practice that is all but forgotten in our constant race of technology and instant communication. This admonition is the crux of Sarah’s message:

“there is no other desolation like reaching

the last of a thing before you realize it–”

And so, thank goodness for this book you hold in your hands. I am so grateful to Sarah for the reminder, and for all the beauty contained in these small pages.
