At the intersection of spiritual mysticism and quantum mechanics lies the earth-shattering existential philosophy that reality itself is, by nature, subjective. The debut poetry collection of Boston-based educator, activist, and spoken word poet Katya Zinn, human verses takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through the spectrum of consciousness. The poems within explore our everyday preoccupation with the collective illusion of a singular universe, while ensconced in personal, self-constructed universes of perception. A defiant examination of trauma, loss, healing, and survival by an exciting new voice in poetry, this book will change your perspective on what it means to suffer, to persevere, and ultimately, what it means to be human.
Katya Zinn is a Boston-based performance poet, activist, and educator. She graduated summa cum laude from Lesley University in 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Expressive Art Therapy and a Global Studies minor. Her work has appeared in Underground, Merrimack Review, Silver Needle Press, and Where the Mind Dwells. She is the recipient of an upcoming Fulbright fellowship to Malaysia, where she will be teaching English and spoken word poetry in rural communities. Kayta’s poetry holds the reader really close and really tenderly. I often return to work I’ve read before and feel those feelings again, and new pieces of old poems stick out to me every time I read them. The work lets me be vulnerable with myself without feeling twisted up inside or ashamed. Katya’s work is cathartic, powerful, and deeply necessary.

I have had the honor of standing beside Katya on Slam stage, witnessing them read, beholding the presence they have, how they command the whole audience. I have also seen this book in its younger stages. Even then, it was breathtaking, how it journeyed through the whole range of the human experience. In its finished form, the journey is that much greater. There are not enough words to express how exquisite this person, and this book, is. You are bound to leave it, shook, deeply and profoundly shook.
