Preethi Krishnan –
What a ride it was to read this collection! On nostalgia, to violence, to deportation, to place, and diaspora. It’s a gift to be able to protect your memories in such a beautiful form. I laughed at times, felt shaken at other times, and sometimes felt like I was listening to a lovely story. I wish I knew Spanish so that I could have enjoyed every word directly rather than through a translation. Yet, I enjoyed the experience so much! These may be true stories but some of the expressions in the collection made me laugh in joy because they reminded me of my home.
Especially this line from the poem The Crease of Almidón that describes the place you are from:
“From have you eaten is the follow-up question to hello.”
It’s exactly how it is at home. Very beautiful.
“From dulce de papaya, pasta de guayaba y todo lo que causa diabetis.”
This just made me laugh.
All this sweet nostalgia, just after reading about Larry Davis and ending with the very powerful Papo Hueso. It was the perfect ending.
Highly recommended for a delightful and powerful experience! Don’t miss it!
