Gary Thomas’ All the Connecting Lights considers and celebrates the spirit of places, senses, and moments of lives lived in past and present Central California. The poems reveal the coherence and light within people who live and dream there, and the pairs of people who try to make their connected and individual lives work. All the Connecting Lights opens us to the blessings—sometimes mixed—afforded to humans anywhere as they share the common amazement. The book’s title is taken from the poem “Even This Day,” which speaks to the resilience and wonder of students, and the strictures adults impose on them: “Anyone reading this after we have done breathing / should know we were as alive as if we had been singing / or drifting on small rafts, heading downstream, / staring straight above at all the connecting lights.”
Gary Thomas grew up on a peach farm outside Empire, California. Prior to retirement, he taught eighth grade language arts for thirty-one years, and junior college English for seven, sharing and discussing at least one poem every day with his students. He has presented poetry workshops for statewide organizations, festivals, and conferences. He has had poems published in California English, In the Grove, Time of Singing, and The Comstock Review, among others, and in the anthologies More Than Soil, More Than Sky: The Modesto Poets and three of the Collision series. He is currently vice president of the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center.
