What do you do with a difficult life of broken promises and dreams, of freeways leading nowhere and bars like neon caverns where an hour can last for years, with divorce and lost friendships? Well, you can write poems like the stunning poetry in Coco Sinatra, Laurie Barton‘s chapbook from Finishing Line Press. You can sing, you can dance, and your songs will be dark songs and your dance will be a dark dance. We live in post-Covid times and many of our poems are dark. Isn’t that what poetry is about, telling the truth? These poems are lit up with flashes of truth, short poems that will awe you with their craft, humor and tenderness.

–Richard Garcia, author of Porridge

Coco Sinatra is a navigation of solitude, aging, and loss. It revels in life’s daily magic–its “diamonds dipped in suntan oil”–while casting a clear eye at dysfunction. The reader stumbles into a family home being put on the rental market, a celebration of Christmas at a pub crawl. A few celebrity sightings are interspersed with the poignant confusion of Elvis and Priscilla holding hands in divorce court. These poems do not shy away from tragedy and violence as they pine for a chance at love and security. In the end, there is hope on a nostalgic train ride as “the future climbs like a ripe vine.”

Laurie Barton is a Pushcart Prize nominee, Best of the Net finalist, and winner of the New Southerner Literary Prize in Poetry. Her work has appeared in juked, Glass, Bending Genres, Lunch Ticket, Jabberwock Review and Snakeskin UK. She lives in southern California and teaches English to speakers of other languages.
