In DAY JOB, Jan Ball once again navigates the human condition with quirky humor and deft description. She leads us on a poetic tour of various jobs, ranging from hair stylist, massage therapist, undertaker, fishmonger, Uber driver, and even gives a snapshot of her own work during and after leaving a Catholic convent.  With each encounter, Ball invites us to come with her on a journey to become more fully human, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

“Don’t become complacent when you read Jan Ball’s poems in “Day Job”. Right around the corner in many of her poems is a jolt that turns a seemingly ordinary experience into a twitch in the reader’s nervous system: a cadaver in a beer cooler; a deformed fetus; an unattractive aging body; a formula on how to kill someone; a few ex-nuns getting an adrenaline shot from shoplifting. The somewhat sinister nature of human beings lies just beneath the pleasantries and sets the reader on edge when he/she comes to them. Be prepared to clench your teeth a few times.”
