Ellen Savage was born and raised on Chicago’s North Shore when there was still plenty of open land to fly kites, climb trees, catch frogs and search for the wild flower known as shooting stars. She learned to feel at home in nature from the many walks in the woods by the lagoon to look for birds that she took with her parents, brother and sisters. Music was also a part of her family. With her brother on cello, her sisters on violin and Ellen on the viola they made up a string quartet who not only played for family gatherings at holidays and birthdays, but enjoyed each other’s company so much that rehearsals were filled with joking and laughter. Ellen graduated from the University of Illinois at the Chicago Medical Center with a degree in nursing and has worked in neonatology, obstetrics, gynecology, allergy and asthma during her career. Her interest in poetry was sparked after she began studying yoga and the teacher read at the open and close of each practice. Inspiration followed Rumi, Jayne Hirshfield, Stanley Kunitz, Rilke, David Whyte, Naomi Shahib Nye and Mary Oliver. When Ellen’s son, Dylan, left for college she began to devote serious time to writing. An avid bird watcher, she incorporates her love of the natural world in much of her work. She lives with her husband, Sean, and her rescued Pomeranian, Blackjack.
