Geraniums from the Little Sophias of Unruly Wisdom by Cheryl Ann Passanisi

Passanisi’s work is amorous and fleshy, a generous plethora of well wrought images which balance the lyrical impulse with the narrative to transmit a current of desire, entwining into one taught rope the themes of kinship, music, and brokenness. These themes are set against a backdrop of impending catastrophe and mystical visitations. I am reminded of the feminine vulnerability and honesty of writers like Edith Wharton and Kate Chopin.

There is joy–and, yes, wisdom–to be found in the poems in Cheryl Ann Passanisi’s book. The lines and their music, the depth and strong images carry a reader away, at times into Passanisi’s world of opera and other times as a companion behind the camera of her eyes, within the experience of her senses, on the streets of Venice or Paris, or even in heaven with her grandmother and brother who never had a chance to be in her life.
