The poems in Douglas Delaney’s Lacus Somniorum are ‘part of a continuous repainting of a world.” It is a repainting that that can only exist in words, not images or even in film: “butterfly shadows across a rainless/sky of invisible hands.” We learn that “Cairo in July defies the heat/as do her long black gloves.” This is a book that opens “At the far edge of visibility.” It is where Delaney sheds the burden of description while reminding us that what happens in poetry isn’t a dream. In these marvelous poems, “The history of language/is being charted” word by word, note by note.

Lacus Somniorum presents a world where memory, history, and ephemeral forces converge. Through vivid imagery and fluid shifts in perspective, the poems traverse landscapes of endurance and transformation—from the weary persistence of migratory paths to the haunting resonance of forgotten histories. Whether contemplating the vastness of a field, the mechanical rhythms of modernity, or the quiet rebellion of a flower returning to seed, each piece invites readers to navigate the distance between what is known and what is possible. Grounded in both the monumental and the fleeting, this collection charts an evocative journey through the intersections of language, time, and space.

Doug grew up in the wilds of New Jersey.  He eventually settled in the Boston area after a stint in New Hampshire for high school. He wrestled with the thought of being either a logger or an actor before deciding on letting the universe determine his future. The universe decided he should teach in the Emerson College Creative Program.  Later, he worked as a management consultant specializing in innovation and strategic marketing for Fortune 500 companies. He is also well known for a remarkable list of celebrity sightings, interactions and potential friendships.

Today he has relocated to Hoboken, NJ where he enjoys a slight view of the Empire State Building from his living room. He lives with his wife Teresa and their young Shiba Inu, Pretzel who is both demanding and mysterious.
