I have known of Prabha Prabhu’s poems for years. I have watched them increase in beauty, their passion become more fierce, their serenity deepen. It is a great pleasure to see Layers arrive. I love the use of stirring which permeates her poems: The incandescent flowers stirring to life, the winds of trouble stirred across the world, the stew of fury and cooperation she wishes to serve us. This book contains wonders and a faith in the things of the world we need in our present day. We need Prabha Prabhu’s true and clear voice. Partake with her, oh readers.

Individuality reigns supreme in the poems which comprise Prabha Nayak Prabhu’s chapbook, Layers. She uses poetic devices such as alliteration and internal rhyme, but best of all, she knows her subjects so intimately and analyzes the situations in her poems so well that she presents to us what might otherwise seem ordinary, such as an autumn leaf fallen into a flower pot, as extraordinary. Prabhu’s work contains the wisdom of her ancient forebears of India, though written in 21st Century American style. In these well-wrought, well-thought-out poems, it is evident that Prabha Nayak Prabhu is a modern sage.

Humor and food are essential ingredients in Layers. Prabha Prabhu stirs the pot in a charming blend of deft language and playfulness.    In the poem “In the Shadows“, she perks the appetite by talking of “tiny gleaming slivers of red, green and yellow peppers.”   I find myself waiting for the meal.   In one of my favorite passages in “Insidious Changes” (such a delightful title considering the subject), she confides, “I end up looking/ like an overstuffed sausage.” In the concluding line of this poem, she admits “The real culprit is the stuffing.” Finding humor and playfulness is rare in poetry today.  In reading Prabha one savors the joy and pleasure in the Layers.

A poet of many gifts, Prabha Nayak Prabhu possesses two assets that a poet must have: heart and vision. Her vision goes well beyond the physical sense of sight, as evidenced in the title of her debut collection, Layers. There is always something more to the story, an ironic point or underlying message, a deeper layer. This book is a series of verbal snapshots laced with Prabha’s striking observations. She views the world through poetic eyes, notices the “swarms of chirpy sparrows” and the “fireflies weaving fluorescent patterns in the darkness.” Her words overflow with gratitude for the times when “the sun breaks through the clouds / covers the lake in a sheet /of glimmering light.” The poet understands that “few pay heed to the sights and sounds of the here and now…” She crafts words into feelings and feelings into words, telling truths in a beautiful way. Her voice is honest and clear, full of humor and grace, and she shares her thoughts, viewpoints and unique view of the world, capturing beauty in all forms. These are poems that teach us to look outside ourselves, poems that urge us to open our eyes, to watch life happening around us.
