Lightsheen (Subsea Sheen) by Alexandra Gilliam

Alexandra Gilliam‘s Lightsheen (Subsea sheen) gives us revelation: she makes language alive, discovers language alive, wills language alive, listens language alive, in utterly wonderful ways. This book is genius. What else do I want to say about it? Every kind of story is here. Texas is here. Critique is here. Liberation is here. Being trapped in the self is here. The strongest, subtlest music is here. Courage is here. Water is here. Light is here.

Raw and unapologetic. This is a place  where I can speak truths without being polite. Lightsheen (subsea sheen) is discovering a crawlspace in this chaotic world, attempting to find space in the modern media obsession and the obsession of female body, highlighting the necessity of “Say his, her, their name” Black lives matter,  learning a new language that is not English, brother surviving addiction, loss of friends and an engagement, growing old in a world that hasn’t seen your female body, and finding love.

Alexandra earned her MFA in Creative Writing from California College of the Arts. She is the author of chapbook, Femmesturary dancing girl press, 2016. Find her work at Second Stutter, In Parentheses Magazine, LIT, and Aspasiology in response to Donna de la Perrière.
