LOVE AND ORANGES by Carla Carlson

“We are all stranger than we show,” writes Carla Carlson in LOVE AND ORANGES. These are beautiful, taut poems: “[m]y husband sleeps on a golden bed/in the room adjacent./ He’s being hypnotized, I hope/by the sound of rain.” Behind the wit and lyricism, there’s Rilke’s imperative: you must change your life. The rigors of transformation, willed or involuntary, haunt this book like a second level of meaning. Carlson channels a peony: “the first time I bloomed was nothing more/than a taste of cotton candy lip gloss./The next time you won’t know me–” LOVE AND ORANGES is work of stellar depth and clarity.”

Frankly, LOVE AND ORANGES, is one of the craftiest and craft-wise collections I’ve read in months! These are sophisticated poems, grounded in the “mechanics” of our daily on-goingness. But there’s such crazy hope, and monkey-foolishness glinted throughout the sequence, this orchestrated circus. Beware: oncoming headlights and full-heart.

If you listen carefully, there’s a faint music behind everyday life—sometimes sorrowful, sometimes suffused with bliss. Carla Carlson’s lyrical poems beautifully capture this music in ways that make us see anew the world and its ceaselessly unfolding net of relations.
