Port of Leaving is a personal inquiry into the heart of identity. Divided into three parts, Father, Relatives, and Portugal and the World, Roberto Christiano explores the roots he knows and those he can only imagine. Here are a father and son at diametrically opposite ends—one trying to survive, the other given the luxury to create. Here is a family in search of the American dream from poverty stricken and war ravaged Europe. Here is a history which underwrote much of civilization—with and without civility. The poems unfold in narratives of bravery, humor, conflict, illness, and ultimately love.
Roberto Christiano won the 2010 Fiction Award from The Northern Virginia Review for his story, “The Care of Roses.” His poems have appeared in Prairie Schooner (Pushcart Nominated), Poetry Quarterly, Beltway Quarterly, Silk Road, The Sow’s Ear, New Verse News, and The Washington Post. He has won two consecutives prizes from Writer.org for seasonal poetry. His work is included in the anthology, The Gávea-Brown Book of Portuguese-American Poetry.
