Quarry Song by Phyllis Price

The land with its “field[s] of ancient stone, … paths and pastures,” the land rich in memory binds the poems in Phyllis Price‘s treasure of a collection. From the “farmer bent over a spreading row” of the opening poem to the “stanzas gaping / like old farm gates” of the closing poem, images of a country life suffuse the work. Words and lines sing together, sometimes in the perfect rhyme of trim and brim, burst and thirst, sometimes in the slant rhyme of hunter and hound. At times, the music comes from a refrain-“I want to …”-and at times from the sheer lyrical quality of image upon image. Price sings the reader home to a “small light left on / and an open book.”

–Connie Jordan Green, author of Household Inventory, Winner of the Brick Road Poetry Prize

The poetry in Phyllis Price‘s excellent new collection Quarry Song is vibrant like song-inviting the reader to become an eyewitness to intimate moments: “You were not one for blossoming things / blushed at the will of the weather, / no profusion of color to fill / a vase or press in a book. Your passion…” Price’s poetry is honest and beautiful.
