A former colleague of mine always wrote “NO LOVE POEMS” on her syllabi. She hadn’t read Margaret Rhee‘s tender book, or lines like “there is no sweeter lullaby than the hum of your servomotor.” If poetry has been dulled by the abuses of repetition and cliché, Rhee knows how to turn a worn moment into a fresh one: “you fall deeply into the small of moonlight. / fall deeply into circuits and glow”; “Your glow upon my face. My name is / Engraved into your board.” A kinetic game of “find and replace” (find “heart,” replace with “servomotor”), Rhee’s love poems do not alter much where they alteration find, but she shifts just enough to put spring back in the step of the love poem.

Near the start of this amazing progression of Eros, “plentiful oil,” cranked up volume, and dreams, Margaret Rhee lays out the terms of endearment: “there is no love manual for robots.” Take note, reader, that the ambiguity—like the famous hair of the werewolf at Trader Vic’s—is “perfect.” But Radio Heart’s few pages are chock full of unexpected signals—the arc here goes way beyond style and hip quips about the future or tossed-off love, virtual love. Radio Heart—algorithms and all—is nothing less than an extremely bold foray into the limits of unpredictable and quite imperfect hearts; in Radio Heart love is conditional and tense and astoundingly human.

Margaret Rhee is a poet, scholar, and new media artist. Her debut poetry collection Love, Robot, named a 2017 Best Book of Poetry by Entropy Magazine and awarded a 2018 Elgin Award by the Science Fiction Poetry Association and the 2019 Best Book Award in Poetry by the Asian American Studies Association. Her poetry chapbooks include Yellow and Radio Heart; or, How Robots Fall Out of Love, and forthcoming collection Poetry Machines: A Letter to a Future Reader (Spring 2020). Currently, she is completing her monograph How We Became Human: Race, Robots, and the Asian American Body.

Prior to the University at Buffalo, she taught at the University of Oregon in Gender and Women Studies, and as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Film and Television and Gender Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. From 2018 – 2019, she was a College Fellow in Digital Practice in the English Department at Harvard University and currently is a member of MetaLab @ Harvard and an editorial board member of –empyre– a global community of new media artists, curators, theorists, producers, and community members (Cornell University).

She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in ethnic studies with a designated emphasis in new media studies. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Study at SUNY Buffalo and the recipient of the Diversity Faculty Fellowship, SUNY wide competition.

She currently leads Palah 파랗 Light Lab, a creative space that fosters poetry, participation, and pedagogy through technology and equity.

She welcomes student advisement in the following areas: electronic literature, film, poetry, feminist, racial, and queer theory, robotic art, Asian American Studies, creative writing, AIDS, incarceration, participatory media, and new media art.
