In Dawn Angelicca Barcelona‘s Roundtrip, the poet’s departures and returns enact the constant journey of memory and the way our scars connect us to what is no longer here but still palpable. This is a moving collection reminding us of the power of poetry to bridge the distances wrought by loss and longing.

—Natasha Trethewey, author of The House of Being and Native Guard

The poems in Dawn Angelicca Barcelona‘s debut chapbook, Roundtrip, invite the reader into the author’s experiences as she moves through the world. This intimate collection opens with “Woman Lost While Looking For Stars” where the author writes poignantly on the physical and emotional distance between a daughter and mother: “My mother warned me not to look up too quickly,/ the sun will bite, your neck might snap. She says don’t answer/ the door for anyone and this refrain pours onward,/ until my eyes are covered with stars.” What follows are poems that skillfully chronicle memory and place; childhood and family; loss and love. Penetrating images abound such as in Portrait in Sepia: “Cuttlefish shoot smokescreens/ then spend hours in hiding… Their blood—not quite red—/and ink—not quite black—” This is a poetic journey you’ll want to take.
—Maw Shein WinStorage Unit for the Spirit House (Omnidawn)

The poems of Roundtrip are tethered to many places–New Jersey, the Philippines, South Korea, California–and reveal how one body can hold multiple “hearts // each beating in a different time zone.” In this collection, Dawn Angelicca Barcelona explores how locating “home” becomes complicated for diasporic people, especially for people who have inherited a history of colonization and imperialism. Roundtrip hungers for familiarity–for family–and recognizes that one way to find it is through tending to our wounds, both the ones that were inflicted upon us and the ones we were complicit in creating.

–Jennifer Perrine, author of Beautiful Outlaw and Again

Roundtrip examines what our relationship is to the idea of home, and what distance and space unlocks for healing when we leave one home in order to build another. The speaker wrestles with her identity and family history as she journeys from the blacktop playgrounds in New Jersey to her grandfather’s casket in the Philippines, from board game cafes in Seoul to the wildfire-ridden Lake Tahoe. She reconciles with her scars through cycles of departure and arrival, learning to live with a heart that can love, hurt, and beat in multiple places at once.

Dawn Angelicca Barcelona is a Filipina-American writer from New Jersey. She is a recipient Epiphany’s Fresh Voices Fellowship (2023) and the San Francisco Foundation/Nomadic Press Literary Award in Poetry (2022). She likes to dance, talk about mental health, and travel via public transportation.
