Finishing Line Press is pleased to announce the publication of  Shy,  a collection of Poems by local writer, Theresa Hickey.  In this third collection of her poetry we see what can happen when we stop and try to be attentive to the still, small voice within us; when we discover and learn to become more trusting of our inner–more centered–more authentic selves.  Some would call this mindfulness– noticing “the extraordinary amid the commonplace.”

All the poems reflect a love of faith and family.  Poems like “December’s Children” which is dedicated to children who died in the Sandy Hook School shootings of December 14, 2012, express a reverence for the families while others like  “Something About Trees,” “Love Where do you Go” and “The Promise” suggest a positive perspective on death and dying.

Earlier books include Raising the Child and Sighs of a Gracious Nature.  Poems from these collections have appeared in New England Memories, FaithND (Notre Dame), Halcyon Days, NatureWriting, Still Point Arts Quarterly, Sextant and other journals.

“Creativity Knocks” is a workshop developed and presented to the Encompass Community of Friend’s Academy (Dartmouth, MA) and Pelican Bay Women’s League Writers (Naples, FL) by Mrs. Hickey.  “Poetry Pizza,” an  introduction to poetry for the young,  will be presented  to Encompass families this fall.

A former Salem State University arts’ administrator, Theresa is married to Michael Hickey of Dartmouth and is a Communicant of St. Mary’s Church.  The Hickeys have four children and seven grandchildren who enrich their lives and always teach them something new.  To contact Theresa, write her at theresadhickey@gmail.com or visit the Finishing Line Press website.

Jon Meyer of Brilliance Publishing is featuring Theresa Hickey (SHY) among his recommended authors. His website promotes the work of New England writers.

In this commanding collection Theresa Hickey helps the reader “see countless things we miss / that shape the world of poets.”  The poems enlighten us with vision and balance.  Shy is a tender gift to the weary soul.

Theresa Hickey is a free-lance writer, poet and lifelong learner who was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.  A former community reporter for local newspapers, she wrote publicity for Salem State University’s Creative and Performance Arts Center events.   When she retired from public service, she realized how much she missed the students and wondered how she might  remain connected to them.  She began to focus on personal writing projects by participating in the Pelican Bay Women Writers and the Writers Forum of Naples, Florida, where she and her husband of 54 years spend the winter.  Prior to writing Shy, she published two other chapbooks of poems, Raising the Child, and Sighs of a Gracious Nature.   Her work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies and earned an EnnyWriters Award from Naples Magazine.

As the mother of four, grandmother of seven, she believes her husband, children and grandchildren continue to teach her something new every day.   They inspire her to write about faith, family and friends and by so doing, she discovers more about herself and humanity.

She encourages the work of other writers by presenting workshops such as the one she developed for Hodges University—“Creativity Knocks.”  As a communicant of St. Mary’s (MA) and St. John the Evangelist Churches, she believes in giving back, so proceeds from her chapbooks support area soup kitchens, shelters for abused women, the arts, and other nonprofits.

Two more current poems by Theresa Hickey, author of SHY (Jan. 2020) will be featured in contemporary anthologies.  Eber and Wein Publishing will feature “The Healer”  in TURNING the CORNER in April. GROWING UP, LIFESPAN, Vol 2. will publish her work which acknowledges the loving  relationships  that shape us. Hickey has been appointed a member of the Catholic Press Association (Media) since the publication of her book and she will serve as facilitator for the Pelican Bay Women’s Writers group for the 2021-22 season.
