Slipshod and Standing is the protagonist Mark Silver’s coming of age story, from his father’s hardware store—coming to grips with antisemitism as well—to his adult life as a reporter for a rural newspaper along the Lake Michigan shore. Baseball and running were Silver’s salvation, motorcycles his undoing. From ballyards to freight yards, farmyards to graveyards, the characters in this collection are runners, skiers, farm workers, social workers, fathers, mothers and lovers, often set against the backdrop of the great lakes that shaped them.
B.L. Makiefsky was born and raised in Detroit, and spent his truly formative years living an itinerant life picking cherries in the Hood River Valley, harvesting hemp in Iowa, working construction in California, writing for a newspaper in West Michigan, crisscrossing the country on motorcycles, hopping trains, and hitchhiking. At Michigan State University, he studied under the writers Albert Drake and Douglas Lawder. Makiefsky was the winner of the 2012 Michigan Writers Cooperative Press chapbook contest for the short story collection, Fathers and Sons. His fiction and articles have appeared in numerous literary magazines, and other publications.
