In Steppping Back, Roth captures life moments and paints them with words. Her focus on detail invites us to pause before a larger image, a larger story unfolds. In this foist collection of poems, themes of love, joy, and loss are delicately woven with the authors’ deep appreciation of the natural world, transforming familiar experiences into moments of grace.

Barbara Roth invites us into her world with poems like “Summer”, a psalm to the intense yet simple pleasures of the season. from the first poem in this collection, she begins to “paint the poems across the pages”, giving us images of beloved dogs, beach houses filled with family and friend, and the landscape of southwestern ohio where “soybean fields yellowed by Autumn” transition to the foothills of the Appalachians. She brings a painter’s eye to her writing, rich with imagery that carries with it “cobwebs of memory,” the “long buried aches” of sorrow and “joyful showers of affections”. Within their vivid images of everyday life, Roth’s poems carry with them the irresistible “beacon” that will “call you home”.

Stepping Back

by Barbara Roth

$13.99, paper

Barbara grew up north of Cincinnati in the village of Wyoming. From an early age, she enjoyed reading which led to writing poems about the world around her. She had several poems published in high school. In college while majoring in Education, she took several classes in creative writing. Once out of college, Barbara moved to the countryside and would often use her experiences in Appalachia as topics for short stories and poetry. As a teacher, she incorporated creative writing and poetry into many of her classroom lessons as a means of encouraging children to discover their view of the world. Later as a counselor and school social worker, Barbara encouraged children to use poetry and other forms of writing as a venue for developing their own creativity and to help them handle life situations. For the past thirty one years, she has sent a personal poem as a Christmas greeting to family and friends. She has also participated in numerous workshops and classes. In April 2015 Barbara was one of the four winners in the Hamilton County Library Poetry Contest.

Since retiring, Barbara has spent her time working with rescue dogs, gardening, kayaking, and biking trips abroad. Her outdoor experiences keep her in touch with Nature which is one of her favorite writing topics. She and her husband have two rescue dogs and a cat and divide their between Maine and Ohio.
