Mark Rothko was often asked how long it took him to make a painting. Once, he famously answered, “Let’s see, I turn 57 this year.” The lyrical meditations that make up the pages of Tarantula Season are similar products of “slow time,” and invite us to read them as the chronicle of a lengthy education: education in its etymological sense, as an e ducere or leading-outward. The winding galleries of this book of poems lead us through its overarching themes of place and displacement, interiority and expressivity, toward a sea-change in the familiar notions of desire and loss, time and recurrence, identity and difference, common notions transformed and enriched beyond recognition in these hymns to life’s savage beauty, leaving us always in awe of the pitiless majesty of the world.
DB Jonas is an orchardist living in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of northern New Mexico. Born in California, raised in Japan and Mexico, he studied philosophy and literature at the Universities of California and Padova, and earned postgraduate degrees at Princeton and Yale. Following his retirement from a long career in business and the sciences, he returned to the practice of poetry. His work has been widely published in poetry journals throughout the US, UK, Europe and Israel. Tarantula Season is his first collection of poetry.
