Keith Mark Gaboury’s The Boy Born With a Pinhole Heart is a moving collection dealing with family history, particularly a grandfather’s heroism and decline. The speaker of these poems confides, reveals, laments and ultimately sees his experience as part of “a family of naked stars shining onto waves breaking anew.” Central to the saga is the speaker’s place among loved ones and in the world at large.  He has stepped “through a wormhole into this shivering reality,” and it is only moonlight that he feels will “wrap me into a hug.” The Boy Born With a Pinhole Heart tells the story of a family with intimacy and grace.

The Boy Born With A Pinhole Heart chronicles the members of a family through one boy’s perspective. Following the chapbook’s title poem, the successive poems focus on the grandfather as he returns from his military service in World War II, plays cribbage with his grandson, and then ultimately succumbs to dementia. After his grandfather’s death, the boy navigates adolescence and young adulthood. During this time, he wrestles with his great-uncle being sexually molested as a boy and his mother’s depression that leads to her death. From this trauma, the boy born with a pinhole heart discovers the man he is meant to be.

Keith Mark Gaboury studied English and creative writing at Baker University, San Francisco State University, and Emerson College.
