In “Poet’s Garden,” Marcia Blacker compares writing poems to planting seeds that “Burst into bloom.”  This simile aptly describes her collection of poems in which she reflects on a variety of themes.  Blacker writes about family traditions and strong bonds, “the sad sweet taste of memories,” women’s friendships, and the passage of time.  Especially poignant are her poems describing the inexorable decline of a loved one who has dementia, and the losses both partners experience.  Happier memories are associated with nature, especially the ocean and the seasons.  Everyday acts like knitting and fishing take on a greater significance.  Many of Blacker’s poems are like prayers, such as “Honey of My Faith.”  She skillfully uses rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, and refrains to appeal to the eye and the ear.  Inviting us into her garden of poems, Blacker presents us with a colorful bouquet.
