“In the American grain, these fine poems follow lines carved by John Wesley Powell, Ed Abbey, and millennia of nomadic Indigenous before them.”

–Paul Lindholdt, author of “Making Landfall.”

In this collections, Alan Weltzien attends fiercely to what Mary Oliver calls our ‘wild and precious life’ in this case fourteen days on a float trip through the Grand Canyon. Against the humbling vastness of prehistoric and geologic time, Weltzien deploys spare, haiku-like imagery to sketch his companions as they engage with their environment and with one another, settling into the daily rhythms of life on an ancient and otherworldly river. With photographic attention to detail, and a relentless drive toward the epiphanic moment, these poems mark most beautifully the ephemeral nature of even the most memorable human experiences.

–David Fenimore, University of Nevada, Reno
