In Betty Les’s book “Touring the Stars,“ we see the genius of her ability to take her keen observational skills as a scientist into the imagistic world she creates in her poems.

When she writes, in “Time Crawled Out of the Ocean,” she posits that humans possibly reset “their sense of time, toward mystery / toward /connection.” And that is what Betty does for us, she resets time and lets her meticulous observations take us beyond reality to the mystery and connections that she makes of this vast universe.  She observes the single flower, the particular animal, the named tree, and using imagery that is both surprising and exact, enables us to see what we so often miss; she sees the connections, taking us with her into her beautiful poetry, seemingly simple, but truly profound.

When you read Betty Les’s poems, give yourself time, time to be quiet, allow yourself to enter another view of the “things of this world” as you tour the stars with a magical guide.

–Fran Claggett-Holland, Poet, teacher, educational consultant

In Betty Les‘ collection of poetry “a spirit unfold its wings… and tours the stars”. These poems are meditations on the “gift of noticing”. The poet’s poems are filled with numinous beauty and a keen appreciation of the natural world. They are a quiet call to care for the earth we inhabit and to wonder what the stars chatter about.

Touring the Stars explores themes of science, nature and the human spirit and the myriad ways they are connected. Mysteries open and you are invited into the world of  birds and insects, rivers, trees and rocks–their ways, their deep presence and consciousness.  Using simple observations and spare form, the author captures the profound that exists all around us, casting new light on the world we inhabit and offering new ways of being.

Betty is a scientist and poet, exploring themes of nature and the human condition. Her poems explore everyday observations, inviting readers into a world of mystery and connections. Betty’s poems have appeared in numerous Redwood Writers Anthologies, in Reverberations I, II, and III  published by the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, in Vision and Verse, published by the California Writers Club and in the California Writers Club Literary Review.  Betty was selected as an Award of Merit Poet in 2018 and nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2023.
