Translation from the Ordinary by Charity Everitt

Charity Everitt’s debut chapbook, Translation from the Ordinary, is anything but ordinary. Her book is built on “ambiguities to be found in even our most cherished truths.” While she references the book’s origin as inspired by two parallel lines from Biblical Psalms, her poems reach far beyond religion or spirituality. Everitt’s poetry is often grounded in every-day images – tuna hot dish and salads, spiders, yellow sandals, and more. But she is keenly aware of the complexities and struggles of human existence and spurs the reader to grapple with them all in her work. With sharp natural and human-made imagery and powerful emotion, she delves into the most poignant aspects of life – grief, aging, loss, love, and rebirth. In rich language and depth of meaning, she challenges readers to recognize the human condition, and to sustain each other with hope and resilience for the future.

–Alan Perry, author of Clerk of the Dead

Charity Everitt’s depth and range of imagination dazzles throughout this fierce and magical collection of twenty-two poems which go beyond the personal to encompass the uncertainties of our current human condition.  With both vivid imagery and a spiritual presence, her captivating writing will “..surprise you with music / loosed by the world’s rocking.”

–Anita Rankin – author of Bloodstone Bhava and Transform Stress through Creative Energy

The poems in “Translation from the Ordinary” are gathered around two slightly different renderings of a verse from the Book of Psalms, responding to occurrences of everyday life – the death of a parent, a spider building its web, a letter from friends in a foreign country. They amplify the ongoing conversation between the material and the spiritual, between our own efforts to act within a consistent moral or religious code, and living within a trustworthy mercy not of our own making which becomes part of our ordinary life and thus transforms it.

Charity Everitt currently lives in Tucson, Arizona, where she was born and raised, and is retired following a career in technical writing and engineering software design and development.   Her poems have appeared in Lyrical Iowa, Comstock Review, Concho River Review, Her Words/Black Mountain Press, River Heron Review, Allegro, and elsewhere.
