Robyn Brooks M.F.A., poet and playwright, earned her M.F.A. degree in Poetry, from Mills College, and her A.B. degree in English Literature, from University of California, at Berkeley; an Emily Chamberlain Cook Prize in Poetry recipient, and former Student-Teacher-Poet for June Jordan’s Poetry for the People, is also a VONA/Voices alum. In 2005, she participated in Litquake—A San Francisco Literary Festival, with Vona/Voices. Brooks has had poetry published in Berkeley Poetry Review, Penumbra, Milvia Street, The Walrus, The Womanist, What I Want From You: Voices of East Bay Lesbian Poets, and Generations Literary Journal. Brooks participated in a playwriting residency, for PlayGround, in residence at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, 2007-2013. Her plays have been staged at Berkeley Repertory Theatre for PlayGround, Tennessee Women’s Theatre Project Women’s Work, Nashville, Tennessee, Theatre of Yugen, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles Women’s Theater Project, Palm Springs, CA, Theatre Rhinoceros, San Francisco, CA, and LunaSea, San Francisco, CA. Her play, Door Number Four, which was staged at Berkeley Repertory Theatre for PlayGround and Tennessee Women’s Theatre Project for Women’s Work, was also short-listed for the 2014 She Said Yes! Mail-Order Dramaturgy Program, and selected for participation in the 2014 DC Black Theatre Festival. Most recently, her full-length poetry manuscript, “confessions of an urban nude,” was a finalist, and short-listed, for Kore Press 2014 Open Submissions.
