Pas de Deux for the Time Being: an experiment in collaboration is a book of poems written by Richard Garcia and Miho Kinnas. They started with a simpler form of haibun – haiku and prose. As they progressed, the form evolved. Richard is known for his prose poems, and Miho for her short poems written in the forms of her own creation—So, at this time of publication, their collaborative work includes the elements from renga (Japanese-style linked poem), haibun, monostich, prose poem and haiku. This unique form, however, doesn’t get in the way of enjoying their witty, somewhat strange, poetry.

From Richard Garcia:

Pas de Deux for the Time Being is an epistolary experiment in collaboration, consisting of interlinked poetry and prose, employing renga, monostich, prose poem and haiku. Two poets, respond to each other’s work in an improvisational conversation.

Ask a theoretical/ physicist about time/ and you get metaphor. This collection from Richard Garcia and Miho Kinnas gives the same answer. In time/space interaction, these playful poets flirt with edges in light brush strokes, prose-poem calligraphy locked in imagination. I slept in my favorite voice says one. Does everything begin in a void? they ask as mermaids, music, flotsam and jetsam dance about. Using monostich, a one-line poem/title as one choreographed step, While Kayaking One Late Afternoon He Reminded Me that I Knew How to Love requires we find the poem in between, in this case, literally a blank page. Or solve how Creme de la Creme is not a Compliment. There is truth in the simple pleasure of coconut pie, humor in lost things, perspective on this world we scroll through: They are viewing the words in reverse—as if they had passed through the stars and were viewing the universe from the other side. In this pas de deux, time loses relevance, traditions mesh a rollicking two-step renga and haibun, the monostich gluing them apart. Erasing all clues of your existence, they remind us, water will recede/ but mud stays. Rolling in mud is great fun.

I love this book. Two superb poets have blended Japanese and English forms to improvise their way through the many rooms of the heart. The result of their collaboration is a true pas de deux—two voices becoming one in a whirl of images and sounds. You will be dancing on air!
