Jacquie Velasco‘s debut chapbook, I Don’t Keep Diaries Anymore, chronicles the complexities of a life with no privacy. It explores the aftermath of a youth spent as the family scapegoat, in a world without safe spaces, and raises the question of what finding peace looks like in a life without control. The collection is bittersweet and bold, and written with an expertise in tender frankness that will leave you weeping and cheering as the narrator rises from a mountain of ashes to end the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

PRAISE:

“I Don’t Keep Diaries Anymore” is a heart shattering debut chapbook by Jacquie Velasco that is impossible to put down. The collection takes you on a journey of a life without privacy, and the long term emotional and physical repercussions of this hyper-surveilled development. Though the collection lands at a place of well deserved peace and quiet, the road to it’s hopeful sendoff for the next generation left my eyes leaking time and time again.
–Jenna Deblin, poet and editor.

.

In I Don’t Keep Diaries Anymore, Jacquie Velasco gives voice to the cost of growing up with nowhere to hide—and the courage it takes to imagine a life beyond that hurt. These poems trace a path through family wounds, stolen privacy, and the longing for a place that feels like your own. With vulnerability, grit, and flashes of hard-won hope, Velasco transforms survival into a tender, defiant act of breaking the past’s hold. A debut collection for anyone who has had to find their way home to themselves.
