This Blue World explores moments of love—romantic, parental, and sibling—that shape our lives and bind us together. Haiku and quotations from loved ones are woven between poems, and they reveal an oral and linguistic history of grief, humor, longing, and hope. Whether a poem focuses on new love later in life or the love between a mother and child, This Blue World articulates the transformative relationships and occasions that populate our daily lives. #poetry #love #transformation #oralhistory #family

PRAISE:

Already the author of several remarkable chapbooks, Jenny Benjamin has been on my list of must-read poets for a number of years now. This Blue World, Jenny’s first full-length collection of poems, is a volume that will resonate with a wide sphere of readers: “I’m grappling here, grasping for those pure moments/that hold us together/a pocket universe/of love and more love and more love”. In these wonderfully evocative poems—at turns, heartbreaking, nostalgic, joyously funny—I found myself drawn into multiple perspectives: to be a young daughter and sister, a teen, a married woman with children, then divorced and a single mother, a grieving daughter with no living parents, later finding true love in middle-age. This is a gorgeous book, a pocket universe, made of love and more love.
–Mauricio Kilwein Guevara, author of POEMA

This Blue World spans the ever-turning days of a rich life, mining memories long past and recent, lingering in small moments with liquid language and sensory suggestions that wrap the reader in experiences and their impacts. Each poem stands strong on its own, but when read front to back, they intertwine to offer an intimate view of a life filled with laughter, loss, and love. Poems range from free verse to haiku to single-line inserts, each of which perfectly suits its subject, placement, and intent. The collection’s patterns of repetitions and callbacks integrate the poems in moods and across generations. Individual words, phrases, and images linger with me since reading, as does my emotional connection to the layered life explored in This Blue World.
–Sandy Brehl, Author of ODIN’S PROMISE trilogy, poetry, and picture books

Jenny Benjamin’s sturdy stock— “a scrappy people sprouting from coal on both sides” provides the fundamental grounding necessary to take flight across a “wide sky or gray lines across a lake stacked like a cake of blues.” Alternating between such plain spoken and lyrical language, less confessional and more obligational— she commits to navigating a weighty past, single parenting of three children, and mid-life dating as both poet and citizen of a permanently shifting culture. But she is mostly the loving, welcome mother here, the warm megalith of humankind, who “can be found in any intricate structure the world offers,” as Benjamin makes abundantly clear in this promising debut.
–Scott Zieher, author of 8 books of poetry with 900 RECENT POEMS forthcoming in 2026
