Travel back in time to small town Ireland in the 1970s, a place where the few who left rarely returned and those who stayed formed a close knit community where the lives of several generations of families simultaneously revolved around the many small grocery stores and pubs there which had often remain unchanged for decades. It was an era before neutralized accents and personalities where there were more strong character actors than stars; a time where simple pleasures ruled and everyone shared in them collectively and to the same degree.

Francis O’Brien grew up twenty-five yards from the town hall clock in a small Irish town called Athy. Since then, he has lived on several different continents, but the eye of that clock has followed him everywhere. In 2025, two significant milestones occurred – the conversion of the old Town Hall into The Shackleton Experience museum and the 150th year of continuous operation of O’Brien’s Bar and Grocery which is now run by his sister, to whom this book is dedicated.
