The Coming Fall by Georgia Wallace

In “The Coming Fall,” Georgia Wallace celebrates the world in which “we fall from the garden / into the grace of now.” That fall begins with a tomboy’s superhero leap from a garage roof into a prepubescent world of purloined cigarettes and stolen kisses and “that first tingle of something” that leads a grown-up woman joyfully “into the backseats and beds of ordinary and extraordinary lovers.” But a fallen world has its darkness — a remote mother “wrapped in the angry blanket of my father”–and its promise of death when a city bus explodes or a wounded heart is like a “tight fist slamming against tomorrow.” Wallace, an accomplished poet, asks us to leap with her toward the coming fall.
