PRAISE:

“Women are the watchmen,” sings Brianne Turczynski in this gorgeous collection that celebrates the miracle of how stories, the sweetest or the toughest ones, are handed down from our earliest grandmothers to generations of daughters, even those in the future. With Turczynski’s attentive craft and depth of vision, these poems electrify every-day and earthly scenes of cigarettes (“smoke doesn’t lie”), spunk and lipstick, a last meal a grandmother was able to serve (“tea and gorgonzola on a plate with / crackers; Mother complained of /the smell; I knew I’d have to / remember it.”) Yet the transcendent and devotional infuses the collection with mystery and radical love, from a moment after giving birth when life itself is “placed on our chests / bloody and crying,” and “we are the closest to heaven / we have ever been,” to a poem that ends without finishing its thoughts as the speaker falls asleep in prayer. Vatic, geopsychic, rebellious and bowing at once, these poems will be gifts for readers’ souls, as they have been for mine.

The poems in Brianne Turczynski‘s Lake of our Histories feel whispered across generations—spoken over tea, through smoke, and in the dark. They hold grief without spectacle and truth without apology, illuminating the ways women carry what is unfinished and love one another through it. The voice is steady, intimate, and devastatingly honest. Women emerge as witnesses and keepers, passing history hand to hand, breath to breath, and holding what official histories abandon while asking how we live with what we inherit.
–Linda K. Sienkiewicz, poet and author of Love and Other Incurable Ailments
