Mama’s Blues is a portrait of love and the relationship between a first-born son and his mother, but central to the powerfully emotional poetry in this book is the existential loss experienced by a son as he watches his mother’s decline and eventual death due to Alzheimer’s Disease. With only 20 years between them, the son and mother portrayed here grew up together; partners in pain and living.
